A member of a forum I read recently asked the question, "Does anybody ever make any decent money online?" There were 123 posts in response to this question. Many agreed that it was a long struggle and that they had put in many months and even years into online business building with little or no returns. Most assured the questioner that it was possible to make good money and that many actually did.
I found the discussion encouraging, because I too had been at it for two years without making money. I wondered if I was in the minority or majority in my experience. Yet the discussion gave me no hard data. It was all anecdotal coming from the perceptions of the posters.
Then I came across an e-book by Soren Jordansen, a Dane, who had actually done a real study of the question. He is an internet marketer and blogger whose primary job is to provide content and training for his members to further their internet marketing careers. He had an opt-in list of 25,000 when he took the survey. Ten percent of his members responded to the survey, which is a statistically valid percentage to give a fairly reliable take on his entire membership.
He suggests that "chances are that the average would also apply to any list you have within the internet marketing niche."
Correlation Between Opt-in List Building and Money Making
In answer to the question, "How long have you been involved in internet marketing?" Soren got the following results: 22 % had been involved 0-6 months, 22% had been involved 6-12 months, 22% had been involved 1-2 years, 21 % had been involved 2-5 years, and 12% had been working at internet marketing 5 or more years. This gives us an idea of the proportions of internet marketers out there looking for help.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. To the question, "What is your monthly income from internet marketing?" Soren got the following responses: 50% were making no monthly income from their internet marketing efforts, 39% were making less than $500.00 a month, 6% making $500 to $1,000, 2.60% making $1,000 to $2,500 a month,.37% making $2,500 to $5,000 a month,.37% making $5,000 to $10,000 a month, and 1.49% were making more than $10,000 a month.
When you combine those who make nothing and those who make less than $500 a month you have a total of 88% of the people involved in internet marketing who do not make significant money on the internet. That says the vast majority of those building home based businesses on the internet are making little or no money. This raises the question "Why?"
It is right here that Soren's research suggests an answer. To the question, "Are you building your own email list?" he got the following results: 58% said "yes" and 42% said "no". Then to the question: "How many subscribers do you have on your email list?" he got this insight giving picture. There were 30% who said they were not building a list, 52% who said they had less than 500 on their list, 5% who had between 500 and 1,000, 6.69 % with 1,000 to 2,500, 1.86% with 2,500 to 5,000, 1.86 with 5,000 to 10,000, and 2.97% with more than 10,000 names on their opt-ion list. You can see the correlation between opt-in list building and monthly income. A total of 82% of the respondents have either no opt-in list or one with less than 500 names. Soren Jordansen says, "I would bet my entire business that almost all the people not making money online fall into the 0 to 500 subscriber bracket."
Obstacles to Effective Opt-in List Building
As demonstrated in the previous article, there is usually a huge time laps between when a person begins to build an online business and when he or she begins to make significant money from their business, if at all. I would suggest that one of the primary ways for us to help more people starting an internet business to make money is to focus on the priority of "opt-in list building" and helping them learn how to build their own quality email list.
Why is it that so few build a quality and sufficiently large opt-in list? I would suggest the following obstacles:
? Failure to realize the strategic importance of list building for money making from the beginning of their online business building.
? Lack of "know how" in list building. There are so many different methods that can be used and so many hyped up offers being presented to them that it can be very confusing and overwhelming.
? Failure to know what to do with one's list once you have built it can be rather intimidating. "How can I, a newcomer to the field, give my list of people the value they need week after week to build their trust in me and to entice them to buy from me?"
? Failure to believe that "I can actually build a massive opt-in list!" It's the question of needing a certain level of confidence.
The main point of this article is to convince you that opt-in list building needs to become one of your priorities if it isn't already. Your effectiveness in list building will largely determine your effectiveness in internet marketing and the amount of money you will make.
