The Various Types of Radiation Therapy

Dr. Sheilane Mabanta explains the types of radiation therapy and their functions

Decatur, TX, July 25, 2018 – Radiation therapy is one of the best, effective and most commonly used form of cancer treatment.  It utilizes high doses of radiation to shrink tumors and kill cancer cells or slow their growth by destroying their DNA. Radiation therapy does not kill the cancer cells instantly but takes days or weeks before the cells start to die and keep dying for months on.

"Radiation therapy has a wide range of uses. It leads to the cure of cancer and relieves the symptoms of more advanced forms of cancers. Radiotherapy is targeted treatment that aims directly and accurately at the location of cancer," explained Dr. Mabanta. “The advancements in technology for radiation therapy have made cancer treatments more effective, quicker and accurate.”

Below are the types of radiotherapy:

•    Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) – It uses computer-generated imaging to focus at the exact place the tumor is located. Beams of radiation are delivered to the location in three-dimensional patterns effectively. IMRT is a preferred alternative to surgery because it is less invasive and produces fewer complications and side effects.
•    Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) – IGRT utilizes sophisticated technology in treating tumors. It is combined with IMRT to deliver thin beams of radiation to the location of the tumor by use of computer imaging. At all times, radiation is directed precisely to the tumor location using IGRT.
•    Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy – It is a new technology where powerful biological radiation doses are delivered to a tumor to kill the cancer cells while minimizing exposure of surrounding organs and tissues. It gives the opportunity for a cure of the cancer.

“Radiation therapy ensures that cancer cells are reduced or killed, while protecting most of the other tissues and organs in the body,” added Dr. Mabanta. “Investing in new technology will allow patients to benefit from cutting-edge radiation therapy.”
